''Wangiri'' is a Japanese word meaning 'one ring and drop'. It's a scam that involves a fraudster calling a mobile number at random and hanging up after one or two rings. Calls usually originate from international or unusual numbers, leaving a missed call message, encouraging the recipient to call the number back.
Calling back can be tempting, however, the chances are that you will be routed to an expensive, premium rate service without you even realising.
If you miss a call from a number you don't recognise, particularly from overseas, don't return the call.
If you think you have fallen victim to this scam, please contact your mobile phone provider as soon as possible.
